Ali Daw

Biography

Ali’s main passion in politics has been to raise standards and create greater equality in education, so that each child can have a fair start and a genuine opportunity to realise their full potential, during those precious years spent at school. Like most other people, she has been outraged over the expenses fiasco and is now determined to work from the inside to help the Libdems clean up politics so that once again people can trust their representatives in Westminster.

She is a governor at Chichester FE College and has been chair of governors at Chichester High School for Boys, appointing a new head in the process. Previously, she has been a teacher in Bristol and London for ten years, including being Head of Music in a large inner-city comprehensive.

Ali has been active in Lib Dem politics at many levels over more than 20 years. Her last and biggest campaign involved helping to galvanize local people to save the proposed closure of a thriving A&E Dept of a successful hospital. She was part of the team helping to encourage 10,500 people onto the streets of Chichester in protest against the PCT plans. The people won and St Richards is keeping its A&E Dept.

In the last 10 years she has worked with the Local Government Authority, training presentation, negotiation and communication skills to the UK’s most talented Lib Dem councillors. She has also worked in the Chichester branch as membership secretary, raising funds, as well as many other roles.

Ali moved into business after teaching, taking a sales position at the London Stock Exchange, where she met her husband, Romek. They both moved on to work for Reuters as account managers, a position she enjoyed until deciding to leave to start a family. After having two children (Lauren now 20, Jude, 17) she worked for the Financial Times, setting up and running a new sales team that launched a successful financial information service to City institutions.

Ali now runs her own business training company, working mainly in the City but having developed many other blue-chip clients throughout the UK. Ali is also co-founder and director of an animal welfare organisation, working in partnership with the major national pet charities.

Her hobbies include singing in bands, coastal rowing, theatre and dance, skiing, swimming, literature, and socialising with family and friends.

Ali’s great strengths are integrity and communication. This allows her to listen to constituents and to understand key issues, and then to fight and argue for those issues at a local or national level, including Westminster. Her City background has helped her develop a fearless approach, challenging anyone or any situation that is seen as unjust, unstable or lacking in integrity. She always sees projects through to the end, understanding the need for resilience in the face of adversity and is particularly passionate about speaking up for those who find it hard to speak up for themselves.
